Safe Water Operations Program (SWOP) Coordinator
Red Lake, Ontario

Salary: $90,000 to $100,000

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Primary duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Travel throughout Northern Ontario to First Nation Communities performing assessments, oversight and operational technical support within the water / wastewater systems and facilities.
  • Assist First Nation clients in operating, maintaining and managing community water / wastewater systems and facilities.
  • Evaluate operations and activities of First Nation water treatment facilities, preparing reports with recommended improvements and modifications
  • Provide training and mentoring initiatives to First Nation Operators as a means to preparing them for certification and building capacity within the First Nation Communities.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual reports to be submitted to the First Nation, Tribal Council, Health Canada and Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC)
  • Provide assistance to Band Administration in managing water and wastewater operating budgets and assist in controlling expenditures
  • Work within the provisions as outlined within the Provincial Occupational Health & Safety Act and Canada Labour Code regulations in order to maintain a safe work environment within the water / wastewater systems and facilities.
  • The ability to troubleshoot to emergency situations with the water treatment / distribution systems and facilities either by remote and / or onsite response.

Prerequisites
The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications (minimum requirements):

  • Grade 12 Diploma or equivalent
  • Class III Water Treatment Certification
  • Class II Water Distribution Certification
  • Valid Ontario driver’s license or equivalent
  • NOTE: This position requires travel to remote First Nation communities

Water/Wastewater Project Supervisor
Ignace, Ontario

Brief Job Description:

In addition to the responsibilities typically expected of a water/wastewater treatment plant operator, the project supervisor is also expected to:

  • Perform the duties expected of an Operator-In-Charge (please refer to the Ministry’s policy documents which can be found on the OETC’s website)
  • Direct the activities of other operators on the project
  • Ensure the project is compliant with Provincial Regulations
  • Prepare project updates/reports and communicate activities with the Overall Responsible Operator
  • Prerequisite:
  • Grade 12 Diploma or GED
  • Valid Drivers License in the Province of Ontario
  • Class 1 Water Treatment Certification (Ontario)
  • Class 1 Wastewater Treatment Certification (Ontario)
  • Skills:

The ideal candidate will possess the following skills/qualifications

  • Willing to obtain higher levels of certification
  • Problem-solving/troubleshooting skills
  • Mechanical/electrical skills
  • Willingness to work outside of normal work hours (7:30 am- 4:00 pm) and perform on call duties as required

Mechanical Technician

The successful candidate will be responsible for the following:

  • Implement maintenance schedules
  • Perform maintenance work procedures
  • Work closely with operations and maintenance staff
  • Ensure the optimum efficiency of equipment and work processes
  • Assist in the installation of new equipment
  • Inspect equipment from time to time and ensure its reliability
  • Provide technical support to a multi-disciplinary maintenance team
  • Provide on-call coverage

    The ideal candidate should have:
      • Cultural sensitivity to First Nations people and customs
      • A strong background in mechanical / electrical equipment repairs
      • A strong background in process systems troubleshooting
      • 5+ years “hands-on” experience in Municipal water/wastewater maintenance
      • Computer proficient in MS Office suite - Word, Excel and Power Point
      • Maintenance experience in the industrial equipment and processes would be considered an asset
      • A “hands-on” approach to problem solving
      • Excellent organization and planning skills
      • Excellent leadership skills
      • A “people-people” person
      • Work well in a team environment as well as independently
      • Have excellent interpersonal and communication skills
      • Ability to travel to remote locations by air

Water/Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator
Ignace, Ontario

Job Description:
A water/wastewater treatment plant operator is responsible for the daily operation of the water and wastewater treatment plants. Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Collecting and recording operational data such as chemical feed rates and chemical consumption
  • Testing water quality (chlorine residual, turbidity, iron, phosphorous, dissolved oxygen)
  • Preventative maintenance on plant equipment (pumps, blowers, chemical feeders, diesel generators)
  • Responding to alarms, and troubleshooting and resolving conditions that caused the alarm

Prerequisite:
Grade 12 Diploma or GED, Valid Drivers License in the Province of Ontario

Skills:
 The ideal candidate will possess the following skills/qualifications

  • Possess or willing to obtain water/wastewater certification/licenses
  • Problem-solving/Troubleshooting skills
  • Mechanical and/or electrical skills
  • Willingness to work outside of normal work hours (7:30 am -4:00 pm) and perform on-call duties as required

Water/Wastewater Plant Supervisor
Sioux Lookout, Ontario

Salary: $65,000 to $85,000/year

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Primary duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Manage a Class III Membrane Filtration (Zenon) Water Purification Plant
  • Manage a Class II Activated Sludge (Extended Aeration) Wastewater Treatment Plant
  • Perform duties in accordance with all applicable Provincial Regulations
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual reports to be submitted to the Municipality and Ministry of the Environment
  • Coordinate daily activities of the Senior Plant Operator and Treatment Plant Operators
  • Manage water and wastewater operating budgets and assist in controlling expenditures
  • Work in compliance with the provisions of the Occupational Health & Safety Act to maintain a safe work environment in and around the treatment facilities
  • Respond to, troubleshoot and resolve process upsets and emergencies

Prerequisites
The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications (minimum requirements):

  • Grade 12 Diploma or equivalent
  • Class III Water Treatment Certification
  • Class II Water Distribution Certification
  • Class III Wastewater Treatment Certification
  • Class II Wastewater Collection Certification
  • Valid Ontario driver’s licens
