A History of Service to Northern Ontario

Northern Waterworks was conceived in 1997 as a result of an urgent need for water and wastewater services in both Municipal and First Nation communities throughout Northern Ontario.

Northern Waterworks has provided 13 years of service to communities throughout Northern Ontario when other companies could not or chose not to deal with the unique issues faced on a daily basis. Communities throughout Northern Ontario continue to grow tired of dealing with companies who remain distant, not understanding or addressing the issues of surrounding geographic location and the concerns faced by small, remote, northern communities. Our unique central location in Red Lake provides us with a gateway to many of these communities.

Since 1997 Northern Waterworks Inc. has provided training and services to more than one-quarter of Ontario’s First Nation communities and more than 80% of Ontario’s remote First Nation communities, reaching as far north as Hudson and James Bay, making Northern Waterworks the most experienced of any firm in Canada in providing First Nations with water and wastewater training and services.

Approximately 250 First Nations operators have received some degree of training, ranging from refresher courses to 26 (twenty-six) week, extensive operator-training programs. The company has already achieved Level III certification in First Nation communities through proven training programs and techniques. Northern Waterworks can use this expertise to improve opportunities for success in this project.

Over the past 13 years, Northern Waterworks Inc. has had the opportunity to modify programs and services to meet the specific needs of remote First Nation communities. For instance, training programs have been tailored to meet the requirements of operators who frequently use English only as a second language.

Northern Waterworks is committed to being the best in the business of providing First Nations communities with water and wastewater services. On-site training is customized to suit the client’s needs. Operators learn how to effectively operate, maintain and control their treatment facilities. This also allows the instructor to become familiar with the operator’s facility, enhancing the instructor’s ability to provide technical assistance into the future. Northern Waterworks also has access to Class III water treatment facilities to provide co-op training to First Nation students to ensure that they achieve Level I certification with the mandatory 12-months of experience.

Northern Waterworks has established the Northern Waterworks Training Centre in Red Lake to develop operator skills and build capacity. The training centre is within a fully functional Class III water treatment facility. Equipment on-site will improve the instructor’s ability to teach theory by using practical hands-on demonstrations.

Northern Waterworks is a Northern Ontario “Canadian Firm” and an accredited Operating Authority recognized by the Provincial Ministry of Environment with full responsibilities as defined by Provincial Regulations 170/03 and Drinking Water Act of December 2002.
